<![CDATA[PRATER TECHNICAL PARTNERS - Blog]]>Tue, 07 May 2024 00:44:12 -0400Weebly<![CDATA[A Comparison of Different magnetic & ultrasonic Flow Meters and their specific Uses]]>Mon, 30 Aug 2021 16:21:40 GMThttp://pratertechnical.com/blog/august-30th-2021 Flow meters are devices that measure the various types of flow rates of a liquid. Due to the importance of flow measurement in various areas of work, such as in agricultural irrigation, wastewater management, and industrial sectors, flow measurement accuracy is crucial for successful site performance as well as to ensure the safety of the personnel working there.
There is no universally suitable flow meter. Depending on the situation, factors such as portability, reading accuracy, and invasiveness may or may not be prioritized. Selecting the correct flow meter is critical for the success of a project.
Prater Technical Partners, Inc. is a leading professional manufacturer’s representative and prime distributor for OEM processes and test applications. We focus on providing the best flow, temperature, forcepressure, environmental chambersheating elements & industrial ovens solutions for every business, to ensure the safety and accuracy your company deserves. We are always available to respond to inquiries or provide quotes to ensure the products we provide fit your needs.
A ModMAG M2000 Electromagnetic Flow Meter
Magnetic flow meters offer a high degree of accuracy & repeatability. They are based on the Faraday's Law that a conductor (such as water) moving through a magnetic field induces an electromotive force that is proportional to the velocity of the conductor. Mag meters are very rugged and durable, suitable for harsh duty with options for haz area Class 1 Div 1, or Class 1 Div 2 environments, and offer a long life battery option for remote installations.
Types of Ultrasonic Flow Meters
Two flows that can be measured with ultrasonic based flow meters are liquid velocities through pipes and those through open channels. Examples of open channels are weirs, flumes, and canals, which all require different flow meter types for optimal measurement.
Pipe Flow Meters
Factors that may be prioritized in flow measurement are quick reading, data storage, and ease of measurement. The DXN Portable Clamp-On Ultrasonic Flow Meter uses non-invasive measurement to quickly obtain information from pipes. It also contains a fully customizable screen and an on-screen keyboard for ease of control and data input. The easy installation through clamping onto the outside of pipes of up to 24 inches combined with rapid response times and compact design make this type of flow meter suitable for measuring various flows across plumbing infrastructure. It is also portable.

If portability is less of a concern, and consistent monitoring for selected pipes is more important, flow meters like the Dynasonics TFX-500w could be more suitable. Another clamp-on type, the flow meter is non-invasive and works for clean water pipes of 10 inches or smaller. This makes it suitable for applications such as water distribution and wastewater collection.

Open Channel Flow Meters
For open channels such as flumes, weirs, or channels where sediment does not build up, flow meters such as the iSonic 4000 are an excellent choice. The iSonic is a non-contact ultrasonic sensor that can detect the water levels in a channel as well as provide flow rate and total volume. It requires a simple setup for flumes and weirs and stores a historical log of all its measurements. The rugged IP67 coated aluminum enclosure makes the device more durable. This type of flow meter is ideal for sewer systems, wastewater treatment effluence, industrial discharge, and irrigation channels to name a few.

For open channels and partially filled pipes, one may opt to use a flow meter that can be submerged. With use of flow meters such as the Submerged Doppler Open Channel Flow Meter IS-6000, the need for weirs or flumes can be eliminated. This device uses a low-profile pulse Doppler and level sensor, the former measuring velocity at different levels. This makes the reading more accurate as well as removes the need for recalibration due to seasonal flows. As it is submerged, it can be operated remotely; you can access it from a laptop or smartphone and easily upload its data through either the Ethernet or WiFi. This type of flow meter is ideal for aqueducts, wastewater channels, and industrial discharge.

Low-Profile Nature of the Sensor
In summary, ultrasonic flow meters use ultrasound to measure the velocity of the liquid in the pipe or channel it is connected to unlike other non-invasive methods of flow measurement. Flow meters such as these do not require moving parts; this makes them easy and inexpensive
Non-Invasive Meter - Magnetic Flow Meter
Using the correct flow meter for the job saves time, manpower, and resources, as well as provides the best readings and results. Each kind of flow meter has its specializations. Choosing the ideal device can be one of the most crucial steps for a successful workplace.
